●Quote of the day

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind;
it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees;
it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination,
a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over
timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease.
This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.
Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.
We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.
Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart
the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next,
and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart
and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives
messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and
from the infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows
of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old,
even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves
of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

●ちょっぴり解説コーナー

サムエル・ウルマンの「青春」という名の詩を今日はお届けします。

マスコミに度々とりあげられた時期もあったので、
多くの方がご存知だと思いますが、一度英語で読まれたら
理解も深まるのではないでしょうか。

supple　しなやかな、柔軟な
spring　泉
temperamental　気質上の、性分による
predominance　優勢、目立っていること
timidity　臆病、小心
appetite　食欲、欲望
wrinkle　しわを寄せる
bow　おじぎをする、下げる、垂れる
dust　ほこり、ちり、遺体
lure　魅惑するもの、おびき寄せるもの
infinite　無限のもの、無限の空間
aerial　空気のような、空気の、アンテナ
cynicism　冷笑、皮肉

詩を和訳するのは難しい。私にはセンスがあるとは思えないし、
下の訳よりも、是非英文の原文を読んでください。

「青春とは、人生の一時期を言うのではなく、心の状態のことを指すのである。
青春とは、ばら色の頬、赤い唇、しなやかな体を指すのではなく、
意志の問題であり、想像力の質であり、感情の活力である。
青春とは、人生という深い泉の新鮮さを指すのである。

青春とは、欲望が小心的ではなく、安易なことよりも冒険を好むという気質の
勇気に満ちあふれていることを意味する。
それは、しばしば２０歳の少年よりも、６０歳の人がそなえている。
だれも単なる年を重ねるだけでは老いることはない。
我々は、理想を捨て去った時、はじめて老いるのである。

年月は、肌にしわを寄せるかもしれないが、情熱を捨て去ることが、
魂にしわを生む。心配、恐れ、不信が心を萎縮させ、精神を無にしてしまう。

６０歳であろうと１６歳であろうと、人間誰の心にも不思議なものへの関心、
次は何かという衰えることを知らない子供のような探究心、人生というゲームの
楽しみがある。あなたの、そして私の心の中心には、無線の交信所がある。
人と無限のものから美、希望、歓喜、勇気、力というメッセージを
受け続ける限り、若いままでいられる。

気概をなくし、精神が雪のような皮肉と氷のような悲観で覆われた時、
あなたは年老いたのだ。たとえ２０歳であったとしても。しかし、気概がある限りは、
楽観の波を捕らえ、８０歳で青春のまま死ぬという希望を抱くことができる。」

短時間で訳したものなので、この訳がいいとは思えないので、
有名な訳はインターネットの検索ですぐ出てくるのでご覧下さい。

今日は、昨日、一昨日の反動で長くなりました。

マッカーサーが好きでスピーチにサムエル・ウルマンの詩を使ったり、
東京の事務所に詩を掲げていたのが、日本人の間でこれまで有名になった
理由だそうです。
